ADVOCACY PROJECT

Although Radioligand Therapy (RLT) is formally available in Argentina, high treatment costs and market constraints significantly limit patient access. Fragmented reimbursement systems have not yet integrated RLT into automatic coverage pathways, despite national regulatory frameworks and international endorsements supporting its use. As a result, physicians may hesitate to recommend RLT as doing so may expose patients to legal challenges or significant financial toxicity.

Objective of the project

To establish automatic private reimbursement for RLT, ensuring eligible patients can access treatment without the need for judicial proceedings or individual case-by-case negotiations with insurers.

Thanks to the support of our local Patient Ambassador, Dr. Fernando Acosta, the Oncidium LATAM Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Maria Bastianello, and a representative of ACIAPO, Ignacio Zervino, we have achieved a few important milestones in the path to advocacy focusing our work on:

General public awareness and Media Outreach:

  • Information on RLT was shared across 20 Argentinian oncology patient groups to raise awareness about the therapeutic opportunities this technology offers for established indications, as well as new opportunities currently under research
  • Four  patient testimonials were recorded, to highlight the real-world experience of people living with cancer and their families when confronting barriers to access
  • Interviews across TV, radio, YouTube, and online podcasts, reached an estimated 3.5 million people.

Regulatory & Policy-informed engagement:

  • Specific cases were submitted to the national regulatory agency (ANMAT) to support individual requests for compassionate-use approval.
  • A meeting was held at the Ministry of Health with the Chair of the Oncology Unit to inform government authorities about the unmet medical needs of people living with cancer in Argentina, and correspondence has been opened with members of the technology assessment body (CONETEC).
  • A request to update existing reports on RLT was submitted to the Institute for Clinical and Health Effectiveness (IECS) to ensure that the documents used for decision-making in the country include the latest information on approved indications..

Ongoing efforts are focused on identifying appropriate research opportunities regarding health-economics evidence to provide solid scientific ground for our work, and the engagement of the medical and scientific societies impacted by RLT access.
